AT HOLY ROOD CHURCH - ALL WELCOMEWhy celebrate Christingle? The Children’s Society hold its special Christingle appeal each year to raise vital funds for the children facing life’s harshest challenges. Children, who, this winter, find themselves sleeping rough in parks, bus shelters and shop doorways. The funds raised from Christingle help us to shine a light into the darkness of their lives. The history of Christingle Christingle was established by the Moravian Church in 1747 as a symbol of Christ’s light and love. The Children’s Society introduced it to the Church of England in 1968 and it has since become a popular family and community event. What is a Christingle? The Christingle itself is made up of a lighted candle (symbolising Jesus, the light of the world), mounted n an orange (representing the world), and a red ribbon around the middle of the orange (indicating the blood of Christ). Four cocktail sticks bearing dried fruit or sweets are stuck into the orange to represent the four seasons and the fruits of the earth.

SUNDAY 25th DECEMBER - CHRISTMAS DAY8:00am HOLY COMMUNION 10:00am PARISH COMMUNION
Two challenges (fast becoming Holy Rood traditions) for the Christmas Morning service! -1. If you have opened any presents yet today, bring one to Church at 10 am and you might have today's first chance to wear it / wave it / show it off / blush! 2. Try and remember the tune to "On Ilkley Moor baht 'at" ! (If that looks like a foreign language it isn't - but it goes very well with a famous carol about the nocturnal activities of some itinerant Middle Eastern ovine technicians.) Whatever your tradition, and however you celebrate today -
Everyone at Holy Rood wishes you all the joy and happiness of Christmas ! |
