14th May Matthias Apostle First century The first thing the apostles had to do after the ascension of Christ was to find a replacement for Judas. Peter proposed that the new apostle should have been a disciple from the very beginning, someone who could witness to all of Jesus’ teachings and resurrection. Since both Matthias and Barnabas fitted this description, the disciples cast lots in order to discover God’s will and Matthias was chosen. That is all scripture tells us about Matthias.
27th May Augustine of Canterbury Bishop, missionary and martyr d.603 Augustine’s 40 missions to England got as far as France before tales of Saxon violence frightened them into requesting permission to abort. But Pope St. Gregory the Great had heard that the Saxon invaders were open to evangelisation and was convinced that Augustine, former prior of the abbey of St. Andrew, should lead the mission. With Augustine’s encouragement, the group went to Southern England where King Ethelbert gave them freedom to preach and a place to live. In 597, the king was baptised, Augustine was consecrated Bishop of England, and 10,000 0f the king’s subjects followed him into the church. Augustine tried to unite with the remaining British clergy but differences over the date of Easter kept the churches apart.
