Saints we remember in April21st April Anselm Archbishop of Canterbury and writer b. 1033, d 1109 Driven from his alpine home by an abusive father, Anselm wandered through France until he settled at the monastery of Bec. After the Norman conquest, Anselm won respect in England with his straightforward reasoning. King William Rufus reluctantly appointed him Archbishop of Canterbury and then tried to force him to resign, finally refusing to let Anselm back into the country. Anselm spent his exile writing his great works on the incarnation. He returned when Rufus died, though he continued to struggle with Henry 1 over church rights. 23rd April George Martyr and patron of England d. 303? Churches built as early as the fourth century bear inscriptions to the ‘victorious martyr’ George. George was probably martyred in the city that is now Lod in Israel during the persecution of Christians by Diocletian. Before he was beheaded he called down heavenly fire to destroy the pagan temple. The popular story of George slaying a dragon seems to have originated from the Middle Ages. His popularity in England grew over several centuries in which he was entrusted with the protection of the armies of England. Pope Benedict named him the official patron saint of England in the 18th century.
