Arriving by car

If you want to find the Holy Rood Church building using a satnav, you may like to know the Church Building's postcode is:

BH20 6DD

Bear in mind the church building is a very bad choice for addressing any letters: do use the Vicarage postcode BH20 6EB (see Who's Who page) instead for correspondence.

Parking and pedestrian access

1. Lulworth Road entrance (beside Wool Primary school):

NB - Dogs are not permitted on the school grounds.

We are allowed to park in the school staff car park on Sundays when the school is closed. The school staff car park is accessed by a separate entrance to the school, also on the left heading towards Lulworth, a few metres on after the main double gates to Wool Primary School. (The double gates themselves are kept locked - see below.)

From the staff car park, leave down the flight of stairs and enter the school grounds by the pedestrian gate beside the locked double gates. Go down the school drive beside the school. At the end walk right onto the path leading to the church.

2. On street parking

On street parking is difficult. There is some, but it all involves a walk up Church Lane. The area in this part of Wool is a conservation area with narrow lanes not designed for cars. Church Lane is a cul-de-sac with no pavements and with blind corners.

Please don't use the very limited parking (3 cars in front of the church in Church Lane - but see below) - it is reserved for use by those with restricted mobility.

Wherever you park, please be considerate to residents who have to get in and out of their drives in their vehicles.

Disabled access

We currently have some difficulty providing disabled access to our ancient church building, but it is possible, with care, as follows.

Lulworth Road entrance (beside Wool Primary school):

Access from the road to pedestrians and wheelchairs

Disabled parking: The pedestrian  gate in via the school driveway is kept locked, along with the rest of the school grounds. However the church opens it during service times. The double dates are always locked but may be opened, by prior arrangement with the benefice office, to allow wheelchair users to park in the single disabled space in the grounds. A phone call to the office would be needed well in advance to ensure someone will be available to admit you.

Church Lane entrances (best avoided by wheelchair users)

The main pedestrian entrance to Holy Rood Church, on your right as you look from Church Lane, is unfortunately not recommended for wheelchairs as the upward slope is steep and awkward.

Still in Church Lane, there is a firm gravel slope that is a bit less steep, although not ideal. It is accessed via the south gate, to the left of the churchyard wall as you look from the road. This allows possible wheelchair access by going up the path and then continuing right round the south and west sides of the church, to get into the main north porch entrance on the other side. There is a wooden ramp left in place within the north porch which helps access over the step up into the church. (The north porch is the porch on your right looking up at the church from the road.)

Services with car parking and level disabled access

Remember we have two Wednesday morning Communion services a month, held at the main D'Urberville Hall in Colliers Lane (see the Services pages). This venue has a safer disabled access and usually has much easier parking. (It also features coffee and cake after the services!)

Toilets

There are lavatory facilities (with disabled access) in Holy Rood Churchyard. The toilet is located beside the store on the south west side of the main church building. (It is usually left unlocked during services or else can be unlocked by the duty sidesperson or verger on request.)

Hearing impairment

We have a sound system with a hearing loop. Hearing aid users may wish to use the T setting.
