‘Life in a box’ I am writing this having just returned from the Diocesan Clergy Conference in Derbyshire along with 300+ clergy from across the Diocese. The title of this year’s conference was ‘Fully Alive’. Through Bible Study, worship, workshops, speakers, exploring with others and time out just being (sometimes in the bar!) we were encouraged to look at what it means for us to be fully alive emotionally, spiritually, physically and intellectually, in order that we can be effective witnesses for God in the communities we serve In preparation for the conference we were invited to think about our ‘Life in a box’. The box needed to contain the thing in our lives that make us ‘fully alive’, pictures, symbols, bible text, film, book, hobbies etc. We were invited to be as creative as we liked in decorating the outside and the items used to represent ourselves as being ‘fully alive’ The lid represented the outer person, how we thought others see us before they see what is inside. At first I couldn’t really be bothered to even think about what I would put in my ‘box’ and rejected any idea of preparing for the conference in this way, but then saw it as a bit of a challenge, as to what was really important in my life. My box contained a medley of symbols, some serious, some quite frivolous, some secular, some spiritual. Photographs of family, Bible reading notes, Bible, bottle of wine (picture),my favourite coffee, a half finished crossword, CD of Psalms, book, guides to the Purbeck area, packets of seeds, recipe book, and much much more- its surprising how much you can get in a shoe box!! As an exercise consider what is really important in your life, what will you put in your ‘box’ what makes you ‘fully alive’. Does God feature in your ‘box’? Once again Holy Rood is hosting ‘Back to Church Sunday’, when we will be inviting friends and neighbours to come back to Church and join with us and discover what it is like to have God in your life, in your ‘box’, to be fully alive. (September 27th- more details in next months magazine) ‘The glory of God is a human being fully alive.’ (St Iraenaeus) Judy Hill
