Celebrating God’s gifts

On 5th October we give thanks to God for his generous provision for us in our Harvest Festival services. Then on 26th October we thank Him for the gift of His written word, on Bible Sunday. In the background is the ongoing and lively debate about the origins of the universe.

So how is it that Christians can come to different conclusions on this and various other issues when they believe that “all scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3.16)?

There are differing approaches to how we read and interpret the Bible, e.g. the extent to which an understanding of the setting of the passage, what its purpose might be and the style of writing e.g. poetry, narrative, history, legal code, etc. are taken into account. What questions we believe the Bible can answer for us, and how we use the insights from other branches of learning, such as scientific disciplines, to inform our theological conclusions also varies.

However, all Christians come to the same conclusions and beliefs as they read the Bible, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, on the things that are central to salvation and the life of faith, not least that God is the Creator and sustainer of life, and that in Jesus He reveals Himself in the world and enables us to know God personally.

Jesus himself frequently taught in parables that do not always yield their meaning easily. He personally invites us into a creative dialogue with Him that is a dynamic and exciting process and a means of deepening our relationship with Him. On Bible Sunday we recommit ourselves to taking God’s word seriously, praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit “who will lead us into all truth” (John 16.13).
