Lent – looking at it differently Easter comes early this year, and therefore so does Lent, with Ash Wednesday on 6th February. We’ve barely had long enough to fall short of our new year resolutions and we may find someone asking us, “What are you giving up for Lent?” Giving things up is a good discipline, but there are also things we can take up for Lent in preparation for Easter, when we celebrate the man who gave up his life to give new life to the whole world. Here’s a suggestion from the writer Alec Gilmore: “Lent is the time to make a choice – to choose positively to identify with the sufferings of others knowing that if we fail to share in their sufferings we may not be able to share in their resurrection …
“If you doubt the capacity of the mirror to challenge the way you normally look at things, try cutting your hair through one. Without a lot of practice the scissors nearly always go the wrong way. … the looking glass … reverses our impressions and images. It challenges our prejudices and it brings out some of the ways we inflict unnecessary suffering on others.” The Fairtrade movement looks at things differently. Instead of asking how cheaply we can buy various goods, it asks if the producer is getting a fair price. Fairtrade Fortnight falls within Lent (25th February-9th March) so why not try a Fairtrade product you’ve not bought before. Or ask your retailer if their British suppliers receive a decent price for their produce. Try looking at things from someone else’s viewpoint for Lent and see what you can do differently. It could change lives!
