A precious gift in a very ordinary wrapping

Buying the Christmas presents and trying to find something that will give pleasure to each recipient, is a wonderful way of expressing our love and appreciation to friends and family. Wrapping them attractively is the icing on the cake.

In my family we have a tradition of wrapping the less exciting looking gifts in the most imaginative ways.  One year, I received a cheque to help with buying curtains as I moved into my first home.  It arrived in a large envelope which had been decorated to look like a window, complete with fabric curtains and tie-backs.

However the most precious gifts can arrive in the simplest wrappings.  That is the message of the first Christmas:

God the Son took on the form of helpless baby, born into a very ordinary family in a turbulent and dangerous world.

He came to live amongst us to show us the character of God and to set us free from the burden of the sins that we have committed by his death upon the cross.

Through his death and resurrection we are invited into a new relationship with God that can transform our lives in this world, and promises us that same resurrection from the dead and eternal life in God’s presence.

This Christmas may you discover afresh the precious gift of God’s love and the message of salvation that comes to us wrapped in simple form of the Christ child. May it be a gift that you receive and enjoy every day of your lives.
