Harvest – a time for thanksgiving

We’ve had an extraordinary, and for many people, a disastrous year.  The weather conditions have disrupted many lives in this country, with homes, businesses and crops ruined.  Then an outbreak of foot and mouth disease posed a further threat to livelihoods.

As we begin to prepare for Harvest Festival, you might well ask if there is anything to truly give thanks for?

One young woman certainly thinks so: Jo Meredith, whose home in Hull was flooded, recently visited Orissa, India, where over 4.5 million people have been made homeless by floods.  She was there on an Oxfam fact-finding mission.

After meeting Indian families who had lost their homes and all of their belongings, she commented:

“I have been flooded out and lost everything so I know what it is like for the people in India. But in comparison I feel lucky. I can get on with my life because our government can support the people who’ve lost everything.  We can go and buy food from the shops, but the people I’ve met have lost their crops. They haven’t got anything.”

St Paul encourages us to be thankful for what we have, even in the same breath as we ask for help: “Rejoice in the Lord, always, … in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God.” (Philippians 4.4-6 abridged)

At Holy Rood Church, our Harvest Festival giving will support another needy part of the world, the Sudan.  Our Diocesan links with Sudan are long established and we welcome Richard Budd, who accompanied Bishop Tim on a recent visit, as our speaker at the Harvest Service on 30th September at 10.00am.
