Parish News January 2007

New Year, New beginning

It’s the beginning of 2007. As we throw away the old calendars and get out the new ones, I’m sure like me, you will be making New Year resolutions.

It’s as if we want to put behind us the things in our lives we have struggled with, or as may have appeared on our school reports, ‘could do better’.

So in a moment of panic we make unrealistic promises to change those things in our lives we don’t like very much. And of course we all know the consequences, by the end of January or perhaps sooner we’ve either forgotten, or we are struggling, we go back to our old ways.

Consequently much of the things we want to leave behind, follow us into the New Year. We tend to carry our baggage with us from year to year.

If we could start with an entirely clean slate on January 1st 2007 that would be truly wonderful.

The New Year is the opportunity for a new beginning.

But can we start again; can we have a new beginning?

God offers us a new beginning, a new start, a clean slate, when we turn to him.

The Bible records many words of celebration, about being a new person, being forgiven; leaving behind those things we struggle with.

‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercies he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you’…….. 1 peter 3-4

Take this opportunity to grab hold of God’s offer of a new beginning in your life. It’s there for the taking. Of course we need to remember that God isn’t just there at the beginning of a new year, but is always there ready to greet us when we turn to him.

It won’t always be easy, but God promises to walk with us on our journey through life.

The new calendar may not be anything to get excited about, but a new life with God certainly is. Don’t let your past rob you of a joyful present and future. Live your new life that you receive from God with all your heart. And remember whatever happened last year or whatever will happen next year, the best is yet to come.

With every blessing for the coming year.

Judy
