The Victorians told us that children should be seen but not heard. That was not the view that Jesus had. He took children in his arms and blessed them and told the disciples off for trying to bundle them out of the away. Our youngsters are precious. They are our investment in the future because one day it will be their turn to run the shops, the banks, the churches, the police force, industry, whatever. If we ignore them now or side-line them by always putting our own comforts first, then those disadvantaged children may well grow up to be restive rather than reliable members of society. Which of us will want anarchy when we are in retirement? Just as Jesus reached out to children, so the Churches in Wool are trying to do the same thing. In the Easter holidays we aim to run a Children’s Holiday Club for 5 – 11s. It will be a time of fun and thought, of noise and novelty, of arts and crafts, of listening and talking about everyday things and the things of God through the exciting story of Easter. If we had more helpers, we’d extent the age range. Watch out for full details in the magazine and on the churches' web sites. John Matthews – Reader at the parish church. |
