Rev. Judy Hill writes: The end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005 brought us the shocking and dramatic news of the earthquake and the resulting Tsunami in Asia, and its consequences for millions of people. By now other news will be dominating the media headlines, but for those who have been affected by this disaster, its effects are ever present. In all of this we might have asked ourselves, ‘Why does God allow such terrible things to happen to His people?’ ‘How does God permit such a tragedy as the Indian Ocean wave?’ ‘How does he allow innocent people to suffer?’ It is beyond our comprehension what has happened. We are not God. We are his people. He has called us to be partners in his creation. We might respond by saying, ‘God I do not know why this terrifying disaster has happened, but I do know what you want of us; to help the afflicted, comfort the bereaved, send healing to the injured and aid to those who have lost their homes and livelihood.’ And that is how many people throughout the world have responded, including our own community. (See article in magazine re. Friends of the Maldives) Those who have been affected by this disaster will continue to need our support and prayers as they rebuild their lives and communities. This tragedy makes us realise how vulnerable humanity is in the face of nature. We cannot fully understand God, but we can strive to imitate his love and care.
