PAST EVENTS

Wake Up Wool, 23rd June 2007

An ever so slightly grey day on the D'Urberville field - but nevertheless it takes more than that to prevent Holy Rood setting their stall out . .

Jenny Hunt's been working hard as usual - but even in the middle of a field she just can't get away from the Parish News .  . .

. . . while Teapot Club crafts are being sold by Gren Irwin and Diana ("Another fine mess you've got me into!") Williams

Mission Marketplace, 16th June 2007

Purbeck Deanery held a Mission Marketplace on Saturday 16th June. Among the many stalls from different churches was the one from Holy Rood.

Tea Pot Club on show at the Purbeck Deanery Mission Market Day on 16th June, attracting the attention of Archdeacon Alistair Magowan.

Also on the Holy Rood stand were presentations from the Visiting Team, Family Worship and the Parish News.

Mission Link - Visiting Speaker from Sudan

On Sunday 10th June we were fortunate to be able to hear from Revd Daniel Kuot, who spoke of God's grace to him, of his own faith, and of the challenges of being a Youth Pastor in our link diocese of the Sudan.

Revd Daniel Kuot

Afterwards Daniel stayed to lunch - kindly hosted by Rhona at the Vicarage - and gave us some fascinating insights into life in a very different Christian culture.

There is more about  Daniel in the Sudan section on the Salisbury Diocesan Website.

If you would like to know about local links with the Sudanese Christians, and want to meet Revd. Daniel Kuot yourself, there is a fundraising garden party, in support of the Salisbury/Sudan Medical Link, to be held by Bishop David in his garden in Salisbury on June 24th 2007 from 2-5 p.m. and details are available here.

Our New Priest In Charge

Revd. Rhona Floate was licensed as the new Priest in Charge, in Holy Rood Church on Wednesday 16th May 2007.

At the same time, Revd. Bob Naylor, Revd. Judy Hill, and Revd. Rhona Floate were licensed as Curates in each other's parishes to enable them to work more collaboratively.

Licensing of new Lay Pastoral Assistants (Wednesday 9th May 2007)

Left to right: Audrey Beet, Jean Dixon (course leader), Dee McCumiskey, Mike Farley, Ann Bashford,

Carol Sharp, and Pauline Matthews.

Dee McCumiskey, one of the new LPAs in Wool, writes:

Mike Farley, Pauline Matthews and myself from Wool, Audrey Beet and Carol Sharp from Winfrith and Ann Bashford from Wareham, were all commissioned as Lay Pastoral Assistants at Holy Rood Church on Wednesday 9th May.  The service was conducted by the Archdeacon of Dorset, Ven. Alistair Magowan, with Revd. Judy Hill and the Rural Dean Bob Naylor assisting.  It was great to have the support from family, friends and parishioners at the service.

‘Loving our neighbour’ is central to the gospels and to the work of the church in our communities; we look forward to playing our part in the provision of pastoral care to people, within the church and beyond, in their journey through life.

Jean Dixon and Judy Hill were instrumental in our training and we owe them both our gratitude and thanks as we put into practice everything we have learnt as we now embark on the ministry of Lay Pastoral Assistants.

Baptism and Confirmation

Mrs Sylvia Smith was baptised, and confirmed, (at Lady St Mary Church, Wareham) on Sunday 20th May.

Revd. Judy Hill performed the baptism and Rt Revd Tim Thornton, Bishop of Sherborne, the confirmation. Sylvia was prepared for baptism and confirmation by Judy and also Pauline Matthews, one of the LPAs above.

Family Worship (continued) . .

This is a less formal, non-Eucharistic, service for people of all ages, both young and old.

But we would particularly encourage those with young families to come along and join with us.

The service will last about an hour and there will be refreshments afterwards, and an opportunity to meet with other people.

Our next Family Worship will be on 1st July at 10.00am

Learning for Discipleship

What is learning for Discipleship?

Learning for Discipleship is a new imitative in response to popular demand. It’s an easy and accessible way for Christians to learn more about their faith and grow in discipleship. It is made up of a number of courses each consisting of ten 2 hour sessions or equivalent. There are no entry requirements or previous experience- everybody is welcome. You can enrol for a single course or go on to do as many as you like. Where do I go to study? Courses will run on a rolling basis at a number of local learning centres around the Diocese. Your nearest centre will be either Kingston Maurward, Dorchester, or Poole. What will it cost? Each course costs £35 per student or £30 per student where a group of four or more come together from the same parish or benefice. Do I get a qualification? It’s up to you. You’re welcome to just to attend Learning for Discipleship courses. If you choose to submit some work for assessment you can have the benefit of receiving 15 transferable credit points for every course successfully completed. What’s the first step? Easter 2007 - 6am service

A beautiful morning with birds singing and a light frost . .

We gathered outside with candles lit from the fire at the porch and then moved inside the darkened Church celebrating the light of Christ that has come into the world.

After the readings, prayers, and hymns, we walked down the path for the blessing of the Easter Garden.

As we left the sun was rising  . . .

. . and Judy kindly invited as many of us as could stay, for breakfast.

Memorial Service

Sunday April 15th 6.30pm

This is a service of hymns and prayers, an opportunity to reflect and to remember loved ones.

During the service the names of all who have died during the past year are remembered along with others you may wish to remember.

There will be an opportunity to meet the Pastoral Team over tea and coffee after the service.

If you would like to come but have difficulties with transport please contact Judy       462888.

The pain of parting is a price which all those who love have to pay. But the comfort of that love will always remain in precious memories.

"Jars of Change for Jars of Water" - Our WaterAid Lent Appeal 2007

WaterAid logo

As we move into the New Year and consider the months ahead I’m sure that most of us will not give a second thought to how far we will walk to fetch water or where we will go to the to the toilet. However, for the 1.1 billion people who lack access to a safe water supply, the collection of water will dominate their days, weeks and months in 2007.

Soon they’ll be able to collect safe, clean water from a new well.

5000 children will die each day as a result of water related diseases spread by lack of adequate sanitation and hygiene practices.

On average it costs just £15 to help provide one person in the developing world with a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

During Lent you have the opportunity to change the lives of some of the poorest people in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Region by helping to provide safe water supplies and sanitation. Simply collect jars of change for jars of water during Lent and you will enable people to work themselves out of poverty and live healthy lives.

Simply take a sticker from the back of the church and stick onto an empty jar and during Lent fill it with the loose change from your purse or pocket.

All money collected will be sent to WaterAid - the UK’s charity dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene to the world’s poorest people.

Visit their website at http://www.wateraid.org/uk

Wateraid is a registered charity no. 288701
