PAST EVENTSChristingle Service
As part of the Christingle service on 19th December, people brought "candles" (collecting tubes) and a total of £218.90 was collected from these for the Children's Society. Midnight Christmas CommunionA very full Church, and a beautiful start to Christmas Day.
Alternative Christmas CardOnce again we had an alternative Christmas card in Holy Rood. It raised a total of £110 - and here is the explanation of what it was for: Instead of sending cards to those you see why not sign the giant Christmas card in church and donate the money you would have spent to World Vision. You can also purchase alternative gifts from their catalogue (these will also be available in church), or on line at www.greatgifts.org Since 2001, Alternative Gift Catalogue shoppers have given over £9 million worth of life-changing alternative gifts World Vision is one of the world’s leading relief and development agencies. They are a Christian organisation that works with all types of communities irrespective of religious belief.
For instance . . you can give gifts such as . . vaccines
£20.00 will vaccinate 10 children in Angola. (One in four children in Angola dies before his or her fifth birthday, mostly from preventable diseases like malaria and measles.)
Or (less seriously . . . !)Taps?
£6.00 buys a tap providing clean, safe water for families in the hills of Myanmar, instead of trekking miles to fill their water containers. The Tube?
Just £18.00 will buy a 200 ft distribution pipe. A few pot plants?
£10.00 will buy 200 tree seedlings in Kenya. Your seedlings will be grown by schoolchildren in Kenya and planted on the land around their school, which has been badly eroded following deforestation. By improving soil quality, this gift will help the whole community grow better food. Lots of water?
£11.00 will help provide a family in Ethiopia with clean water for a year.
Or even give the kids away!
£14.00 will buy a goat in Malawi, providing milk for a family, and their first kids will be passed onto other families.
So whilst we are busy shopping for Christmas gifts let us also remember those in our world who don’t even have access to the basic necessities of life.
Quiz Night8th Dec 2006Even better questions this time - thanks once more to Glyn and Jenny Hunt!
Judy writes: Many thanks to all those who supported the Christmas Coffee morning and the Quiz Night. A total of £314.00 was raised, as well as us all having some fellowship and fun together. Our next project is to level and re-surface the path leading from Church Lane to the south door, plans for this are well underway, and work should start after Christmas. We also hope to go out to tender for the new kitchen area at the back of the church early in the New Year. On behalf of the PCC I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have supported our fund raising projects throughout the year, and also to thank the volunteers who have helped dig trenches, prepare the new cremation area, clear and tidy the churchyard, and all the other jobs that happen in the background of the life of the church. Judy Earlier that month . . . .Are you prepared for Christmas?(As Judy was writing this in the middle of October, Christmas was still a long way off!) I’m sure there are some of you out there have already started making lists, baking cakes etc. We spend an enormous amount of thought emotion and energy in preparing for Christmas, but do we have time to prepare ourselves for Christ? We all recognise that there are many practical preparations to make for the festive season, but how do we prepare ourselves spiritually? This year at Holy Rood we will be running an Advent study group and a series of sermons on Sundays during Advent, on preparing ourselves for Christ. Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm at 9 High Street Close 28th November 5th December 12th December Thursday afternoons 2.00pm at 9 High Street Close 30th November 7th December 14th December For further details contact Judy - 01929 462888
New service - Family WorshipFamily Worship
10.00am
Sunday 26th November
After much discussion with the PCC, we have decided to introduce a less formal style of worship at Holy Rood. This will be a non-Eucharistic service (no communion), and will last for no longer than an hour. Tea and coffee will be served after the service It is suitable for people of ALL ages, young and old, but we would particularly encourage young families to come along. The first service will be on Sunday 26th November at 10.00am; this will be led by Revd. Tony Stephens, and a small team from St Andrews Church Preston. In the New Year we hope to make this type of less formal service a regular feature at Holy Rood- hopefully once a month. Watch the January magazine for more details.
Tuesday 19th December 5.00pm Holy Rood Church
Why celebrate Christingle?Christingle services bring together family and friends of all ages. The Children’s Society holds its special Christingle appeal each year to raise vital funds for the children facing life’s harshest challenges. Children who may find themselves sleeping rough this winter; or fleeing conflict and war; caught in a cycle of crime; or marginalised due to a disability. The funds raised from Christingle help us to shine light into the darkness of their lives. The history of ChristingleChristingle was established by the Moravian Church in 1747 as a symbol of Christ’s light and love. The Children’s Society introduced it to the Church of England in 1968 and it has since become a popular family and community event. What is a Christingle?
The Christingle itself is made up of a lighted candle (symbolising Jesus, the Light of the World), mounted on an orange (representing the world), and a red ribbon or tape around the middle of the orange (indicating the blood/ love of Christ). Four cocktail sticks bearing dried fruit or sweets are also stuck into the orange to signify the four seasons and the fruits of the earth.
